Being reptile, Bearded dragons are ectothermic. This means that they rely on external heat sources to increase their body temperature. Bearded dragons are also poikilothermic, meaning they can have a variable body temperature depending on the environmental temperature.

Bearded dragons spend most of their daylight time actively basking in the warm sun. This is not only to meat their temperature requirements for normal physiological functioning, but also to absorb ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Being desert animals, Bearded dragon bask almost all day in the hot sun. The sun not only supply their temperature requirements, but emits ultraviolet rays. Because pet Bearded dragons are generally not kept outside in the desert sun, artificial ultraviolet lighting needs to be supplied.
